Greetings Brothers & Friends,
Welcome to the virtual home of the Wilmington, Delaware Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. Celebrating 100 Years of Achievement in Kappa Alpha Psi! We are the Diamond in the Diamond State. Serving the Greater Wilmington community proudly since March 8, 1947. Wilmington Alumni encourages its members to make a positive contribution to our youth and community at large.
Kappa Alpha Psi uses Guide Right as its vehicle to affect change around the nation with all of its various alumni and undergraduate chapters. Guide Right is a program for the educational and employment guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informational in character. Its reach extends to high schools and colleges alike.
The flagship of Wilmington Alumnis Guide Right program is our Achievers program co-sponsored with the Wilmington Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. Each year, around 30 African-American men in their junior and senior years of high school participate in this six month program designed to smooth the transition to college and productive independence. During this program these young men have workshops ranging from financial responsibility, proper etiquette. Achievers also experience a Heritage trip, and a weekend visit with the undergraduate members of Kappa Alpha Psi Nu Xi Chapter members on the campus of the University of Delaware. The Achievers program culminates with a black tie event in which the young men get to showcase all of the skills that they have learned during the session to their families and supporters in the community. Throughout this program the young men raise money for scholarships that they can take with them to the undergraduate institution of their choice. This program has awarded over $300,000 to date.
Guide Right Programs that Wilmington Alumni sponsor also include:
- The annual Kappa Klassic basketball tournament which includes eight local high school teams from the New Castle and Kent County area.
- The Red Clay School District Spelling Bee where the winner of this event goes on to compete in the Delaware State Spelling Bee competition.
- Student of the Year Competition which takes place at our Northeastern Provincial Meeting. The student that competes in this event competes for a scholarship.
- Adopt-a-Family where we adopt a family for an entire year and assist them with items which include but are not limited to food, clothing.
While Wilmington Alumni leads many efforts we desire to do even more. Specifically, our Brothers recognized the need to provide a safe environment for the youth in one of the most underserved areas in Wilmington's east side. In order to fulfill this mission Wilmington Alumni created Kappa Mainstream Leadership-our non-profit arm-to help accomplish this goal. Today, the Brothers of Kappa Mainstream Leadership and Wilmington Alumni are currently in the midst of a large scale capital campaign to transform a former warehouse, in Wilmingtons east side, into a gleaming community-based Achievement Center. The center is located on Vandever Ave and is currently undergoing major construction phase. This is an ambitious project that brings pride not only Wilmington Alumni and Kappa Mainstream Leadership, but the entire City of Wilmington.
This is but a snap shot of Wilmington Alumni's contributions to the greater Wilmington Community. As such we invite you to participate in any or all of our events that you can. We value your support and look forward to serving the Wilmington community this year and many years to come.
Yours truly to our friends &
yours in the Bond to our Noble Brothers,
Calvin L. Smith, Jr.
