GUIDE RIGHT PROGRAM

The Wilmington Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi sponsors an Annual Guide Right Program. This program has been sponsored by our chapter since 1948. We currently serve a community of approximately 400,000 constituents and a Kappa League of about 200 young men. There are several High Schools in our target area. The list of schools includes and is not limited to the following: Howard High School of Technology, Concord High School, Glasgow High School, Village Chapter, Mt. Pleasant High School, Brandywine High School, and A.I. DuPont High School.

The goals of the Wilmington Alumni Chapter are: To provide Community Service to various groups of individuals in the greater New Castle County area. While these groups include the elderly, homeless, and needy, our focus is on African-American males.

- Promote
- Achievement
- Scholarship
- Excellence in African-American males

The Wilmington Alumni Chapter in conjunction with the Wilmington Chapter of The Links, Inc. sponsors the annual Achievers Program. The program was created to encourage and motivate young African-American males to strive for excellence and portray a positive image in society. This past year, twenty-six (26) Achievers were awarded scholarships of $26,000.00 which brings the total awards to $336,600.00 for the life of the program. The scholarships ranged from $74.00 to $3,495.00 depending on the effort put forward.

Dr. William E. Bazzelle, Co-Chairman of Guide Right, for the Northeastern Province, introduced a new Guide Right Program at the C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference held at Yale University-New Haven, Connecticut on October 15-16, 2004. The name of this program is A-Men, which is supported by the Grand Polemarch. The gist of the program deals with students from age 5 to 17 years of age, while focusing on mentoring and scholarships for college attendance.

Wilmington Alumni Chapter members serve as volunteer Mentors for the Achiever Program. Achievers are taught practical life skills by educators, executives, doctors, entrepreneurs, and historians. Needless to say Achievers travel back in time to tour the Underground Railroad in Wilmington which served numerous slaves in their quest for freedom. The African-American Wax Museum in Baltimore, MD is another favorite trip of the Achievers.

Kappa Mainstream Leadership:

In December, 2004, the Wilmington Alumni Chapter took a momentous step towards its vision to establish the Kappa Mainstream Leadership Achievement Center in Wilmington, Delaware. Through the hard work, determination and diligence by the members of the Board of Directors of the Kappa Mainstream Leadership, Inc., we successfully secured $250,000.00 from the Honorable Thomas P. Gordon, New Castle County Executive. These funds will be used exclusively towards converting a 12,000 square foot building to a first class Achievement Center that will provide an assortment of services and resources to low and moderate income families with New Castle County.

In May of 2004, after hearing our proposal for the first time, Mr. Gordon immediately offered his assistance to our project. He indicated that he was truly impressed with the mission of the Mainstream Leadership, Inc. and the level of commitment by the Brothers of Wilmington Alumni Chapter. He knew of no other organization of college educated, professional men who were willing to commit their time and energy to such a worthwhile endeavor.

Mr. Gordon notified the Mainstream Leadership Board in early December, indicating that he identifies monies, in the form of a grant, within an existing departmental budget of the County Government to help finance the historic project.

On Saturday December 4, 2004, the Mainstream Leadership, Inc. hosted a special check presentation ceremony at the Achievement Center. Brother Michael Brewington, Polemarch of the Northeastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was in attendance along with Brothers of the Wilmington Alumni Chapter and University of Delaware, Nu Xi Chapter. Political Dignitaries in attendance for the presentation were as follows:

- Honorable Thomas P. Gordon, New Castle County Executive
- Margaret Rose Henry, State of Delaware Senator
- Dennis Williams, State of Delaware Senator
- Paul Clark, New Castle County Council President
- Norman Griffith, City of Wilmington Councilman
- Ronald Morris, New Castle County Finance Director

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Mr. Gordon pledged and the Chapter has since received an additional $20,000.00 to help fund our proposed thirty station computer lab planned for the first floor of the center. Additionally and equally important, with these funds securely in the budget of the Kappa Mainstream Leadership, Inc., we obtained another $250,000.00 in matching grants from two local Foundations, Longwood ($100,000.00) and Welfare ($150,000.00).

The grand total secured to begin the renovation of our Achievement Center is $520,000.00
